White Witch Hat

So I after writing a post about a gorgeous white witch costume idea where the hat and broom really make it special, I went on a hunt for white witch hats.

There ain’t much out there online unless you are crafty and are willing to make your own white witch hat from scratch as shown in this YouTube video at minute 4:30. This tutorial inspired by Elphaba’s Wicked hat looks simple, but I think it will take a bit of time.  I like to take the route where I refashion something that already exists.  I don’t sew and I love my glue gun.   Cover an existing black witch hat in white fabric, and/ or embellish a white hat with silk flowers and bridal floral bling.

For the non-crafter, or time starved, Amazon and Etsy to the rescue!

White Witch Halloween Costume Idea Photo by Erin Smith of Archive Costumes, Orem, Utah

My friend at Archive Costumes of Orem, Utah posted this picture on their Facebook page of a white witch costume that is available for rental and I fell in love with it!

First, it’s a great photo in a beautiful local park.

Second, I love the hat. I am a sucker for hats.  I haven’t made tons of original hats, but I love to refashion and embellish existing hats.  The broom is pretty cool too.

Third, I love the idea of a witch dressed in white.  It seems so updated.  So fresh.  So youthful and kind. Black is so normal. So predictable. Pink is too Glinda.  White (it might be off white)  is just right. Romantic even.  White may be on my mind because

How to Make Fascinator Hats: Hunger Games Costumes

I am so totally in love with fascinator hats. I love their whimsical and funky designs.  I discovered them a few years back when I made hair accessories for the Lullaby League in a community theater production of “The Wizard of Oz.”

Then of course many people learned about them from the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton.

I am thinking about them again as an essential part of a Capitol Citizen costume for “The Hunger Games.”
