American Sewing Expo: How to Make Costumes

If you like to sew or want to learn how to sew and have a girls getaway, there is a huge sewing expo happening September 26-28, 2014 in Michigan! Three days of interesting sewing classes for all levels of stitchers including costume classes on cosplay, refashioning, fit, fabric, and costume design careers.  Here are the costume class descriptions:

*Costume Magic by Bernadine Vida

Join professional costume designer, Bernadine Vida
as she demonstrates fast and easy costume making
without breaking the bank! It’s fun and simple to cre- ate a multitude of costume pieces using thrift store
garments or even clothes from your own closet.
Watch her as she performs this costume magic right
before your very eyes. Be inspired by the various
examples of costumes made on a budget.

Learn from a costume pattern designer how to mod- ify patterns so people can lift their arms and kick up
their heels in any garment. See how the right fabric

*The Power of Spandex byBernadine Vida
Learn from a sewing expert and costume veteran
everything you need to know to conquer spandex.
Bernadine will cover the different types, when and
where to use which ones, how to determine which
weight and stretch you need for specific projects and
sources of where to buy. Leave this class empowered
and unafraid to sew spandex.

*Intro to Cosplay Sewing by Kristie Good
So you want to start making cosplay costumes but
aren’t sure where to start? Learn the basics of how
to choose a costume, pick appropriate fabrics, and
some sewing basics! Kristie’s many years of cosplay
will inspire you to find your inner fun.

*Living the Life of a Costume Designer by Bernadine Vida
Join professional costume designer, Bernadine Vida
for a fun filled informative seminar on how her
career developed and some of the fascinating stories
she has about designing costumes of all types. From
theatre to movies, operas to cruise ship shows, she
has done it all! Bernadine can even take basic thrift
store garments and turn them into glorious costumes
for any event or occasion. You will learn, laugh and
come away inspired.

*Found-Item Cosplay by Kristie Good
Cosplay costumes don’t always have to be entirely
hand-made. With a few simple alterations it’s
possible to create a costume using items or garments
found in your house or thrift stores. This seminar
focuses on advice on how to make “Found Item
Cosplay”, showing that you don’t have to make
everything from scratch!

Cosplay, short for Costume Play, is all the rage, but
